Dates: May 6-9 2027
Rock gardens. Surf. Downwind runs. Coasteering. Tucked into a sheltered bay south of Larvik on Norway’s southern coast, Gurvika Camping is the perfect base for paddlers who want to push their skills in real, varied conditions. The exposed Skagerrak coastline outside the bay delivers granite skerries riddled with passages and play features, clean beach surf when the swell rolls in, and long open stretches where the prevailing winds set up classic downwind conditions.
What you’ll work on
Over four days you’ll be coached through three core sea kayaking environments. In the rock gardens you’ll learn how to read swell timing, edge confidently through narrow gaps, and use the rebound and clapotis to your advantage. On the surf beaches, expect drills on launching and landing through breakers, catching and controlling waves, and bracing when things get sideways. And on the downwind days, you’ll link runs on wind waves, find rhythm with the sea state, and develop the boat-feel that turns a long crossing into the best part of your week. We also get out of the boats for a session of coasteering — traversing the rocky shoreline by swimming, scrambling and jumping. It’s exhilarating, and some of the best training a sea kayaker can do for reading how swell really behaves against rock.
